Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
