Donald Trump Faces Sharp Criticism from London Mayor Sadiq Khan Ahead of UK Visit

The US president will come to the United Kingdom on Tuesday evening following sharp rebuke from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who claimed Trump of encouraging far-right movements around the world.

Challenges to Government Stance

Viewed as a open criticism to PM Keir Starmer’s government, Khan asserted that the president’s deployment of troops in American cities and treatment of minority groups mirrored methods commonly used in an authoritarian handbook.

Compounding the strain ahead of the trip, a planned deal to scrap trade barriers on UK steel and aluminum reportedly collapsed at the final hour.

Formal and Informal Activities

During his stay, Trump is expected to meet with the king and queen at Windsor Castle, with activities including a walkthrough, a air force demonstration, and a state meal. Talks with Prime Minister Starmer are planned for Thursday at the official country residence.

Despite scheduled rallies against Trump, the agenda is arranged in a way that may prevent the president from witnessing them. However, the visit presents significant potential backlash for Starmer, especially during the planned shared media appearance.

Khan’s Blunt Assessment

Through a commentary, Khan stressed that while maintaining good relations with the US is pragmatic, the UK should not hold back from criticizing a leader who, as he stated, has fueled of polarizing nationalist movements internationally.

“These actions isn’t merely at odds with western values – they are taken directly from the authoritarian’s handbook.”

Khan, who previously clashed with Trump during his 2019 visit, also criticized the military interventions and deportations lacking proper procedure.

Appeal for Leadership

Khan stated that the special relationship between the UK and US should include honesty, even when it means voicing disagreement. He noted that Britain must stand against the politics of fear and division.

Additionally, he blamed UK leaders and media outlets for ignoring growing bigotry and prejudice, which he said contributed to a major far-right demonstration in London days earlier.

“These events that unfolded didn’t appear randomly. For far too long, elected officials and commentators have failed to criticize the rising tide of intolerance in Britain.”

Adding further, “For our leaders, staying quiet is not enough. It is time to stand up and state: this is not our identity.”

Government Response

Leader Starmer was subject to backlash for what some labeled a slow response to the recent demonstration, which included a recorded speech from entrepreneur Elon Musk, who according to sources warned that “violence is coming” and urged the crowd to “resist.”

However, in stronger comments during a government gathering, Starmer stated that the UK faced “a defining battle” against division.

Based on a account of his comments, Starmer told cabinet members that the attacks on police officers and a march led by a convicted criminal were not just shocking but also frightening to the public, notably minority Britons.

Varied Responses within Government

In initial responses, Business Secretary Peter Kyle stated that he was not alarmed by the scope of the demonstration or the language used, stating that it proved that free speech and public gathering were thriving in the UK.

Yet, a government representative subsequently noted that although liberty is a fundamental principle, numerous individuals were scared by calls for conflict and toxic language.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting, speaking at an LGBT event, criticized the claim that rising prejudice could be defended as free speech, describing it as “ridiculous.”

Streeting continued, voicing empathy for those who question whether the government is on their side, and emphasizing that the weekend’s demonstration did not reflect the nation people wish to live in.
