Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the championship lead from his teammate by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team ran a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at corner four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the curbs on exit before spinning across the run-off area, and was lucky to get away with just a minor contact of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the practice, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho corner approaching the final corner on to the start-finish straight. The veteran finished practice in 19th, just behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's car in third, 0.619secs behind Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
